This black-figure vase (c. 6th century BCE) by Attic painter Exekias shows the Greek hero Achilles beating Ajax at the game known as pebbles. Game play has been with us since time immemorial. It is one of the things that make us human. During the Siege of Troy, the Greek army sat in wait for nine years. They would pass the time playing a game not so different from today’s checkers or Go. Even the great heroes were not above setting aside time for play.
